Property values and wildfireOnce again here in the North Country we have dodged the bullet during a severe fire season. Somehow through good luck and a successful prevention effort by our fire departments and fire agencies we had no significant loss of private real property. In June I wrote about curb appeal, and home staging and how by effectively utilizing these two approaches you can maximize the value of your home if you have it for sale. After the article was published I was asked by several of my associates to expand on the article and take into account the area as a whole. The main attraction for living in Flagstaff and surrounding communities is the curb appeal of the area and how nature has staged it. The beautiful scenery along with an abundance of pine trees dot the landscape. The loss of this vegetation and scenery would undoubtly reduce the value of our properties significantly. Should a large fire sweep through one of our neighborhoods we will all share in the loss. I know of no economic study that equates the loss of real estate value to wildfire but I am confident that if a large wildfire devastated part of our town it would affect us all. It behooves us to take stock of our neighborhoods, clean up our yards, ask our fire departments to help reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and thereby keep our property values intact. One thing we can be assured of is that next May and June it will be hot, dry, and windy. Hopefully we will be prepared. Mary Monday is an Associate at RE/MAX Peak Properties.
